Netflix's political thriller The Diplomat returns for its fourth season on Thursday, October 15. Keri Russell is back as Ambassador Kate Wyler, and this time her husband is vice president and may be helping to steal a Russian nuclear weapon. Series creator, showrunner and executive producer Debora Cahn told Netflix's Tudum: "I'm so excited about Season 4. It's going to be a lot of fun." What happens in season 4 Netflix's synopsis says two marriages "threaten to eat each other alive." One catastrophic moment shatters the fragile peace Kate brokered between the US and UK, and the marriage she is trying to save. While she fights to contain the damage, President Grace Penn and Vice President Hal Wyler's plot to steal Russia's most powerful weapon could push the United States towards war. Kate and Todd Penn, "at best an uneasy pair," team up to stop the Grace-Hal alliance from upending the balance of power at home and abroad. "[Fans] should be worried. There's plenty to worry about," Cahn said. "It can be pretty chilling when you see who takes power and get the sense that they may be horrifically misusing it." Cast promotions The season's four leads are Emmy nominees: Russell as Kate, Rufus Sewell as Hal, Allison Janney as Grace Penn and Bradley Whitford as Todd Penn. The West Wing alums Janney and Whitford have been promoted to series regulars, and so has Nana Mensah, who plays White House chief of staff Billie Appiah. "Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off-the-charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus … It's an insane bag of candy," Cahn said. The National notes that Russell has three Emmy nominations for the role, and that Janney won an Emmy for playing Grace last month. The 2026 Emmys were also big for several other series . Key facts Show: The Diplomat, season 4 Premiere: Thursday, October 15, 2026, on Netflix Creator and showrunner: Debora Cahn Leads: Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford Promoted to series regulars: Allison Janney, Bradley Whitford, Nana Mensah First aired: 2023 The story so far The National's recap explains how we got here. The show began in 2023 with Kate preparing for a posting in Afghanistan when an attack on the British aircraft carrier HMS Courageous killed 43 sailors. President William Rayburn (Michael McKean) sent her to London instead, while quietly assessing her as a possible vice president. In season two, Kate traced the attack to Grace Penn, then vice president, who believed it was needed to protect US security interests. Rayburn died soon after learning the truth, which made Grace president. Season three brought the twist: Grace chose Hal, not Kate, as her vice president. A Russian submarine carrying a Poseidon torpedo, described as a "doomsday weapon", was found off the English coast. When the weapon vanished, Kate realised Grace and Hal may have taken it. The season ended with Kate and Todd watching their spouses together. A strong supporting cast The National highlights the show's "complex women in positions of power", including Ali Ahn as CIA London station chief Eidra Park. David Gyasi plays British Foreign Secretary Austin Dennison, and Ato Essandoh plays deputy chief of mission Stuart Hayford. "The unraveling will be fun" Russell told Tudum that "the unraveling will be fun". Sewell agreed: "Whether Kate and Hal are warring, whether they're together, whether there's other people, it's fun for us, whatever's happening." Season one and two in brief According to The National, British prime minister Nicol Trowbridge (Rory Kinnear) first suspected Iran was behind the HMS Courageous attack, but Kate helped prevent an immediate military response. Season one ended with a car bomb meant for Conservative MP Merritt Grove, which caught Stuart and his aide Ronnie in the blast. In season two, Hal and Stuart survived, but Ronnie did not. Kate's investigation led to Margaret "Meg" Roylin (Celia Imrie), Trowbridge's former political adviser, who was involved in hiring the group behind the attack, before the trail led back to Grace Penn. What's next All three earlier seasons are streaming on Netflix now, giving viewers a few days to catch up before October 15.
