Sony's baseball film The Comebacker has added another heavyweight to its line-up. Sterling K. Brown has joined Tom Hanks and Callum Turner in the film, which Marielle Heller is directing, The Hollywood Reporter revealed on October 8, 2026. Brown will play the team's manager. TheWrap reports that the film will open on July 30, 2027. The story The film is adapted from a short story by Dave Eggers, the author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius . Heller wrote the screenplay. The Hollywood Reporter says it is being described as a love letter to baseball, and that it centres on the relationship between a New York Mets pitching coach, played by Hanks, and his pitcher, played by Turner, who is hit by a line drive while on the mound. Patricia Clarkson plays the coach's wife, and Amy Madigan plays the team's owner. TheWrap's account differs. It calls the film a comedy and describes it, based on Eggers' story, as following an older beat reporter whose love of the game is rekindled by the arrival of a new pitcher. The original story, part of Eggers' series The Forgetters , is set around the San Francisco Giants. The film's own synopsis has not been published, so the details of how the adaptation reworks the story are still unclear. He appeared in Tom Tykwer's A Hologram for the King in 2016 and in James Ponsoldt's The Circle in 2017, where he played a villainous tech mogul opposite Emma Watson. TheWrap adds a neat bit of history: Sony's A League of Their Own , another Hanks baseball film, came out in July 1992. Next, he stars opposite Natalie Portman in Roadside Attractions' The Gallerist and appears in Amazon MGM's live-action Voltron . The road to the cast The project has been building for some time. The Hollywood Reporter had already reported that the Hanks-led film scored a summer 2027 release, before Brown's casting was added this month. With Brown, Hanks, Turner, Clarkson and Madigan now attached, the core of the team is in place. Sports Business Journal framed the story around the league's involvement, quoting THR's description of the film as "a love letter to baseball". Heller is both directing and adapting the screenplay, so the shape of the finished story rests largely with her. What's next Sony has not yet released a synopsis or first-look images. Further casting, including whether Bad Bunny or Domingo sign on, is the next thing to watch. Sources: The Hollywood Reporter | TheWrap | Sports Business Journal
