Rain did not stop the party at Back to the City. South African rapper Cassper Nyovest performed at the festival's 20th anniversary edition in Johannesburg, and the morning after he took to X to thank the scene that made him. "Yo, BACK TO THE CITY was FIRE!!!! That crowd showed me live FR!!! THANK YOU SA HIP HOP!!! I owe my whole career to you!!! The start and the core!!! I owe you more music and more energy and I promise to deliver more fire!!!" he wrote. Twenty years of Back to the City The milestone edition was held at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, SA Hip Hop Mag reports. The 2026 festival ran under the theme "Against All Odds" and coincided with the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Youth Uprising and Johannesburg's 140th birthday. The programme went beyond live sets, with rap battles, graffiti, fashion and street culture all part of the day. The bill mixed American guests with local talent. The 2026 festival International acts: Ab-Soul, Slum Village, Blu & Exile South African acts: Emtee, Blxckie, Stogie T, Reason, Tuks, Touchline, Kane Keid Venue: Mary Fitzgerald Square, Newtown, Johannesburg Theme: "Against All Odds" Dancing in the rain Bona reports that fans and the rapper danced through the rain during his set, and the replies to his post were full of clips from the crowd. "You are such a professional and a star," one fan wrote. "SA Hip Hop Loves you bro, you got us out into the rain." Another added: "The hate is only online... we braved the rain, number 1 stage presence!" The outlet notes that Cassper's career began in South African hip-hop before he branched out into other genres, and that his stage presence has long been one of his calling cards, famously co-signed by Kelly Rowland after the Global Citizen concert in 2018. SA Hip Hop Mag frames the post as a sign that he has not forgotten his roots. His thanks were aimed less at his own performance than at the wider culture the festival has championed for two decades. A record donation for Million Voices The festival came days after another milestone for Cassper away from the stage. His Million Voices campaign, which fights period poverty, received R100,000 from SGS South Africa, the testing, inspection and certification company. SA Hip Hop Mag says it is the campaign's biggest publicly acknowledged donation to date. Photos of the cheque handover are dated October 1, 2026. "Our biggest contribution so far and we are so grateful," the rapper wrote. "Your support brings us one step closer to ensuring that more girls have access to essential menstrual products & can continue their education with dignity." Million Voices in numbers Launched: July 2026 Aim: to reach one million girls Fundraising target: R100 million Earlier backer: Universal Music South Africa, R25,000 Latest donation: SGS South Africa, R100,000 The campaign draws on Cassper's perspective as a husband and father to a young daughter, and he has spoken about only recently realising how big the problem is. Limited access to sanitary products still affects school attendance for many South African learners. A busy season for SA hip-hop Back to the City capped a lively few weeks for the local scene. Isaiah Rashad's first South African show was part of the same Johannesburg season, as we reported in his In The City debut , while Nasty C kept the release calendar busy, covered in our As Planned story . The festival's two-decade run makes it one of the longest-running hip-hop events in the country. What's next Cassper has promised "more music and more energy", but no new release has been announced. Million Voices still has a long way to go to its R100 million target, and further corporate backers are likely to be the next news from the campaign. We will add details of any new music once dates are confirmed. Sources: SA Hip Hop Mag | Bona | SA Hip Hop Mag
