Stockport band Blossoms have scored their fifth UK No. 1 album. Songs From The Wedding Cake debuts at the top of the Official Albums Chart, edging out The Beatles' newly refreshed Rubber Soul, which finishes at No. 2. The chart was published on October 9, 2026, according to Official Charts. A close race Music Week reports that Blossoms sold 26,713 units in their first week. That total was made up of 14,939 CDs, 8,387 vinyl albums, 640 cassettes, 1,152 digital downloads and 1,595 sales-equivalent streams. The breakdown shows how strongly the band's fans buy physical formats, which made up the vast majority of the total. According to Music Week's Alan Jones, Blossoms were trailing Rubber Soul until Thursday's sales flashes before pulling ahead. It is the 15th week in a row that the album chart has had a new leader, a sign of how open the race for No. 1 has become. "We're made up" The band told Official Charts: "We're made up. To still be doing this 10 years on from our first album, and to still be getting to Number 1, isn't something we take for granted. Thank you to everyone who bought it, played it or told a mate about it. See you on tour." Songs From The Wedding Cake joins Blossoms (2016), Foolish Loving Spaces (2020), Ribbon Around The Bomb (2022) and Gary (2024) as chart-toppers. Music Week notes that it is their sixth studio album, their seventh top-five entry and their fourth No. 1 in a row. Vinyl and record stores The album also tops the Official Record Store Chart. Rubber Soul, though, rules the Official Vinyl Albums Chart, selling more copies on vinyl than any other album that week, according to Official Charts. The split between the two charts tells its own story: Blossoms won on total sales thanks to a large CD figure, while The Beatles' reissue led on vinyl. Elsewhere on the chart Former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr earns his second solo top-five album, as The Age Of Everything debuts at No. 5, following 2022's Fever Dreams Pts 1-4. South London seven-piece Fat Dog land their highest-charting album yet, with Cancel Me (I'm Tired) entering at No. 13. Drake's HABIBTI returns at No. 20 after the release of an expanded edition. A physical-format win With more than 23,000 of their 26,713 units coming from CDs and vinyl, Blossoms' victory is a reminder of how much physical sales still matter at the top of the UK album chart. Fan bases that buy CDs and records in release week can outpace streaming-led albums, especially in a week when the main competition is a reissue. Why it matters Beating The Beatles makes a good headline, but it also says something about the UK chart. Classic reissues keep competing with new releases, and devoted fan bases buying CDs and vinyl can still decide the top spot. Fifteen different No. 1 albums in fifteen weeks shows how quickly the summit is changing hands. For more UK chart news, visit Entzopedia's United Kingdom hub and our indie rock and rock pages.
