Netflix has renewed its revival of A Different World for a second season. Variety reported the renewal on October 2, 2026. The comedy, a revival of the 1987–1993 NBC sitcom of the same name, follows a new generation of students at the fictional HBCU Hillman College, centred on Deborah, played by Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest child of original characters Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. Season 2: sophomore year Variety published the Season 2 logline: "After transformative summers, Deborah and her Hillman classmates return to campus for sophomore year with a 'New Year, New Me' attitude, only to find themselves faced with past decisions, uncertain futures, new loves and friendships, and deeper questions of purpose… all while, of course, getting themselves into a whole lot of new mess." The cast Alongside Moon, the series stars Alijah Kai, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, Kennedi Reece and Chibuikem Uche. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison reprise their roles as Whitley and Dwayne from the original series, according to Variety. Darryl M. Bell, Cree Summer, Ajai Sanders and Jada Pinkett Smith also appear. Felicia Pride is the show's creator, showrunner, executive producer and writer. Debbie Allen, who directed 83 episodes of the original series, returned as director and executive producer. "The people and Netflix have spoken" "It's so validating to be bolstered by our amazing audience," Pride said in a statement. "We are beyond excited to return to Hillman and continue to tell meaningful and heartfelt stories that resonate across generations. I am thrilled for our brilliant cast and our hard-working crew." Allen added: "YAY! HALLELUJAH! The people and Netflix have spoken. 'A Different World' brought something everybody needed: joy, romance, relevance, authenticity and HEART! Thank you for getting us into the Top 10 worldwide! And now, gear up! We're coming back at you with Season 2!!" The numbers Deadline reports that Season 1 premiered on September 24 and debuted at No. 4 on Netflix's Global Top 10 English TV list, with 4.2 million views and a place in the Top 10 in 15 countries, according to the streamer. Deadline also lists Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood and Mandy Summers among the executive producers. The critical response Variety notes that Season 1 was critically acclaimed. Its critic Aramide Tinubu wrote: "Timely and fresh, the new series distinguishes itself from the original while paying homage to everything that made its predecessor so iconic." Why it matters A Top 10 place in 15 countries points to an audience that extends well beyond the US. A quick renewal for a series set at an HBCU is a strong signal about the appetite for stories centred on Black college life, and for revivals that hand a classic setting to a new generation while bringing back familiar faces. Centring the revival on the daughter of Dwayne and Whitley lets the show speak to longtime fans and new viewers at the same time. The return of Guy and Hardison gives older viewers a direct link to the original, while the young cast carries the new stories. Netflix's autumn The renewal adds to a busy season for the streamer, which has also premiered its East of Eden adaptation and struck a licensing deal with Disney .
